Killing Cancer
Killing Cancer is a charity founded by former music journalist David Longman to promote the use of Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) to combat Cancer. PDT kills cancer cells through a combination of drug and light, which starves the cancer of oxygen allowing the body to heal and create new, healthy cells. Despite being approved by the Department of Health for the treatment of some cancers, fewer than 250 of the 300,000 patients diagnosed with cancer killers received it last year. The treatment has the ability to destroy cancers usually with a single 20-minute session, avoiding the need for invasive surgery and the traumatic effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
In conjunction with Media Celebrity Services Ltd., Killing Cancer launched a major public health campaign last October with 24 hours of coverage on Sky News which included footage of a patient receiving PDT treatment and a live interview with Sir David Frost. Personalities including Sir Alex Ferguson, Chris Tarrant, Sir David Frost, Robert Plant, Jenny Seagrove, Roger Daltrey and Harvey Goldsmith are behind the campaign, urging the public to donate to medical trials of PDT that could revolutionise cancer treatment in the UK – and around the world. The benefits of PDT and Killing Cancer have also been covered in extensive double page spreads in both the Daily Mail and the News of the World.
