Helen Lederer

One of Britain’s best loved and most popular personalities, Helen is thrilled to still be alive and kicking. Following a degree in Sociology, Helen trained at Central School of Speech and Drama before embarking on her career in stand-up comedy. In 2008 she was awarded (with awe and surprise) an honorary degree from Middlesex University. She wrote and performed her own material at London’s famous Comedy Store as part of the early 80’s comedians including French and Saunders, Rik Mayal and Harry Enfield. She was a guest on ITV’s ‘Saturday Night Live’ with her solo comedy act and in sketches with Harry Enfield as well as performing at the first ‘Just for Laughs’ comedy festival in Montreal along with Lenny Henry. Her breakthrough into television soon made her instantly recognizable as one of Britain's best known comedy  character actresses. Her diverse career on TV, radio and the stage as well as being a writer and journalist for national publications has kept her in the public eye.

Helen is possibly best known for her role as the dippy Catriona in all five series of Absolutely Fabulous with Jennifer Saunders but she is also known for her unique brand of wit and observational humour. She is a prolific comedy writer with a bulging portfolio. From the early days at the famous Comedy Store in London, to creating the 'girl at the bar' in BBC’s Naked Video, as well as the ditzy  Catriona  in  Ab  Fab,  Helen  enjoys  the unique position of having starred in most top TV comedy and radio shows. Treading the boards includes following hot on the heels of Julie Walters in Educating Rita, playing Doreen in Alan Bleasdale's Having a Ball and performing in The Vagina Monologues and Calendar Girls in London’s West End interspersed with many fringe theatre plays.

Helen is a sought-after columnist having had regular columns in both The Independent Magazine and Woman and Home. Her work regularly appears in a stream of national press including Woman’s Weekly, My Weekly, The Guardian, Mail on Sunday and The Telegraph. Her Travel writing and wine columns appear in The Mail on Sunday and the Sunday Express Magazine. Her short stories have been published in The Daily Express, Girl's Night In (Harper Collins) and Big Night Out (Harper Collins). Helen’s comedy Extra Time has been optioned by Carnival of Downtown Abbey fame.

Helen is very much in demand for after dinner speaking and award ceremonies, reflecting on the vagaries of 'show business' enjoying the individual requirements of each event. She has also pioneered her own light hearted wine workshops entitled ‘The Show-off’s Guide’ gaining the WSET qualification in Wine. Helen is a patron for Water Aid, UNICEF and has been an Ambassador for The Prince’s Trust for the last fifteen years, recently hosting a celebration with HRH the Prince of Wales on stage together at Windsor Castle.
